5 Reasons It’s Not Too Late to Have Newborn Photos Taken

There’s No Wrong/Right Timeframe for Your Newborn’s First Professional Photo Session

There’s a specific kind of pressure that can be felt when you’re considering having newborn photos professionally taken. I know I beat myself up a bit for scheduling ours a month out from our first’s birthdate. I now look back and know a big part of that guilty feeling was stemming from my hormones + the process of adjusting to such a huge life change. It’s funny how from the moment they arrive it feels like you can’t quite grasp time as it moves faster than ever.

So if this sounds familiar to you, or maybe you’re even currently feeling these thoughts of regret or like you’re too late, have no fear! You are actually just on time my friends — here are my top five reasons as to why it’s definitely not too late for you to schedule newborn photos for your growing family.

1.Giving your body some extra time + tlc before showing up in front of a camera can make for a better experience for the entire family.

As a mother, you’ve given a lot of yourself (physically, emotionally, mentally, etc) to bring this sweet baby into the world. It’s entirely acceptable if you’d like some time to navigate through those first few weeks at home with your focus on you + baby! That old saying “if momma aint happy, no one’s happy”… well that translates here too! We want Momma happy, healthy, and ready for loving on her people when it comes time for the newborn family photoshoot.

2. You are going to be more in tune with your routine, so things may come easier.

Allowing yourself more time before committing to family photos with a newborn can give yourself the gift of routine and expectations. As the weeks progress it’s likely you’ll have a better idea on baby’s naps and sleeping schedule which can allow you to schedule within a timeframe that will make the most from our time together. You can also use that knowledge to decide to incorporate pieces of your routine into your photo session. Everything from feedings to bedtime processes; I welcome every part of your story!

3. The little one may start to share some facial expressions during the shoot!

After a few weeks you may notice your sweet bundle of joy cracking more smiles. It seems around this time more and more of their personality surfaces each day. It’s always so special when we can catch those adorable expressions during our time capturing all these special moments.

4. Gives other family members time to adjust to the plus one.

If you have little ones, then adding another kiddo into the mix can definitely present its own challenges/shifts in family dynamics. Giving everyone a chance to adjust and embrace the newest addition will allow everyone to show up familiar with one another and in a groove that will translate to loving and natural family photos.

5. It’s something you can look forward to while simultaneously not having to pile everything on all at once!

Typically those first few weeks are full of adjustments, visits from loved ones, and so much more. It’s sometimes nice to not add in one more thing while working your way through the newness of it all. Instead, when scheduling your newborn family photos out a ways, you are giving yourself something to look forward to as you focus your current energy on bonding, nurturing, and caring for your precious baby.

These were my top five reasons as to why you can absolutely wait for newborn photos and not feel the pressure of capturing them within the first 48-72hours. Some families find that waiting even up to 12 weeks is the sweet spot for their needs. If even after considering these viewpoints, you would prefer a fresh newborn session, that is also entirely wonderful! You can find my tips on making that successfully happen here.
