Celebrating Turning One

Having a Photographer Capture your Child’s First Birthday is a Gift that keeps Giving

Giving back to moms in unique ways is something I’m always looking to incorporate into my work. Being the one charged with the task of documenting their child’s birthday parties is proving to be one of the best ways to honor moms being moms.

The birthday party featured below was a very special one, the first one. So of course capturing this birthday party was an important part of preserving the memories. After all, you only get one first birthday.

My hope and goal by offering professional photography services for smaller events is to both capture the feeling of being present in the celebration so that the family can relive those moments for years to come while also relieving the parents from that task. This way they can shift their focus to enjoying time with their child instead of seeing it go by in a blur!

They chose to host their party with Indianapolis’ newer coffee spot, Helm Coffee Roasters. It turned out to be the most fitting backdrop to this groovy birthday theme.

Witnessing and capturing Mari’s first little birthday was an absolute treat. It was so lovely to see friends come together; bringing homemade cupcakes, carting in their kiddos, dressing on theme, and celebrating big with Mari and her parents. The ball pit was a super hit — and the fun flowed outside the limits of its container. (Be sure to spot the images of balls scattered throughout the building).

This fabulous bash came to a wrap with (of course) the birthday girl digging into the cake her mother made from scratch. Now that’s a party!

This birthday party was documented using a mix of digital and film photography. A 35mm point and shoot, vintage Polaroids, and a digital point and shoot felt like the perfect combo for this kind of photography coverage (with just a sprinkle of Super 8 footage). If you have an upcoming celebration of similar sorts, take the pressure off yourself to be the one behind the camera, book Loreal to cover those moments. Or if you still need some convincing that it’s a necessary move to hire a professional for a birthday party, check out my top nine reasons as to why it’s a good idea!
