Sun-Drenched Morning Family Session on Film

In Home Photos Captured for Indianapolis Family

“Girl, come park up here in the driveway!” is how Kolbie immediately broke the ice. I glanced out my window to see her and her perfectly round baby bump hanging out the front door with one foot still anchored inside.

It was just seconds until I managed to repark much closer to their front door. Making my way inside I was greeted with warm smiles and the scene of baby shower remnants. (Fresh flowers, ballon arrangements, evidence of love having been poured over this family the day before).

This sweet family is about to welcome their second little girl. Bryar, their oldest, was quick to confirm with me that she’s going to be the absolute best big sister.

When Kolbie booked her family photo session we had planned on shooting just a single roll of film with a pack of vintage polaroids to accompany. Our approach for their lifestyle session was to keep our time together in their home simple and intentional. Well just in the brief time I spent with this family, I fell in love and found myself reloading and working through an additional roll without a second thought — and I’m really happy I did.

I didn’t want to miss a second of Bryar’s gentle charm or Kolbie + Stephen’s natural flow of togetherness. See if you can spot one of my favorite moments from this family shoot. Bryar’s simple request for a portrait of her foot. I agreed as long as the foot said “cheese”; the moment did not disappoint.

To further prove Bryar is a one of a kind kiddo, I got to witness a really cool first for me in my photography career. Children often get enticed to participate in family photos via bribes of candy or fun activities to follow… but not Bryar. Bryar’s treat was cracking eggs. Watching them team up to whip together some breakfast made for a few of my favorite moments from our morning together.

The family sunroom allowed the perfect amount of light to pour into each scene as it unfolded. Fresh flowers left over from the celebration the day before filled the air with that almost springtime aroma and made for a lovely bump prop towards the end of our time together.

Next time I see this crew, they’ll be a party of four and I just can’t wait.

This family and maternity photo session was documented via a mix of film photography. 35mm, medium format, and instant film were all used to create the perfect variety of nostalgic imagery.
