Motherhood Documented Remotely
Capturing Family Photography from Indianapolis to Anywhere
As a nontraditional family photographer, I am always looking for new ways to capture special moments between family members. Since becoming a mother myself, my heart has been even further drawn into efforts to make sure moms are being documented with their babies at all stages in life. Recently I had the unique opportunity to document a mother and son in their home for a remote photo session. It was a chance for us to snap a few simple minutes where we found no shortage of love and connection.
Working with Hope + Santiago wasn’t something I thought I would have the honor of doing since we are states away from one another. But luckily this approach allows a solution to the problem of geography that couldn’t be as easily conquered via traditional studio/on location methods. I can’t wait to share my experience of photographing this new momma + little, and how we were able to make the most of our remotely documented motherhood photoshoot!
One of the aspects of remote sessions that I love is how well it lends itself to documenting new moms. We are both in the comfort of our own homes so there’s just a natural sense of calmness + ease that is present on both sides for this kind of shoot. This approach eliminates the added stress of taking your infant from home to a designated spot, doesn’t require you get all gussied up, and can go at whatever pace we need it to go.
Baby needs a diaper change? Go for it! Need to take a quick break to feed? Yes, what a sweet moment. Little one has a cry to let out? No worries, I can just grab a snack for myself while I wait. (Bonus win: I’m able to carry out these shoots with my own little one on my hip. We all win here as new mommas!)
In preparation for Hope’s remote session with her sweet Santiago we went back and forth only a few times discussing outfit choices + preferred lighting scenarios. That’s the beauty of this method - we can do as much or as little consulting as you’d like before we connect to create something special. I’m just as eager to embrace the surprises as I am to help plan out your vision! During the shoot I will be both a fly on the wall as well as a gentle guide and director. It’s a well balanced formula that yields something one-of-a-kind.
These images below are ones that will be cherished for a lifetime and fondly remembered as a season of overwhelming love, accomplishment, and constant learning.
